About Bol Vivant

How do I maintain my zoetrope / praxinoscope?

To maintain the brilliance of your item, simply dust it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight or humidity to preserve the paint pigments and the quality of the paper.

Are the animation strips interchangeable?

Yes, our models are designed so that you can change the animation strips and vary the visual enjoyment.

What is a Zoetrope?

The zoetrope is a mechanical device invented in 1834, a precursor to cinema. It consists of a cylinder with slits. When rotated, retinal persistence transforms the still images inside into a smooth animation. You can read this article for more information.

What is a Praxinoscope?

The praxinoscope is an animation device invented in 1877 by Émile Reynaud, an evolution of the zoetrope. Instead of looking through slits, you observe the animation reflected in a central mirror, which provides a brighter and smoother image.

Are Bol Vivant products historical replicas?

Our objects (Zootropes, Praxinoscopes) are modern reinterpretations. Although inspired by 19th-century models, they are designed by passionate animators with a contemporary design and original animation strips, redrawn and colored by our workshop.

Will the product I receive be exactly the same as the photo?

As each piece is handcrafted, slight variations in color and finish may exist compared to the photographs on the website. These nuances are inherent to the handcrafted process and contribute to the unique character of each piece. These minor variations are not defects, but rather a testament to the authenticity of our craftsmanship and the charm of artisanal work.

Can I see the animation with the naked eye?

Yes, absolutely! The animation is visible to the naked eye thanks to an optical effect called "persistence of vision." To fully appreciate the effect, place a light source above the zoetrope (desk lamp, natural light) to illuminate the animation strips during rotation.

Use and Education

Is the Zoetrope suitable for children?

Yes, it's an excellent educational tool! It's ideal for family activities, art or science classes, as it allows you to understand the basics of animation and optical illusions in a fun way.

Can I create my own animation?

Yes, absolutely! We offer pre-drawn blank animation strips, specially designed to unleash your creativity. Simply draw, color, and bring your own characters or geometric shapes to life. These strips are ready to use: the frames are already drawn, all you have to do is fill them with your creations!
